why is my snake snapping at me when i open the cage?

i recently received a ball python from a friend and it is about 3 1/2 ft long. My problem is that the previous owner fed the snake in its normal cage and now every time i open the cage he snaps and I'm afraid he is going to bite me. He has never been handled much. i feed him 3 mice every 2 weeks. how can i stop the snapping ? Is this from being fed in his cage and not a separate one ?

I currently have around 220 to 230 snakes and I feed all of them in their cages and I never get bitten as a direct result. Sure, there are several of my snakes which would strike at me if I were to reach straight because they're thinking I'm food. But simple handling techniques make a big difference. With the more aggressive snakes, I just grab them with a snake hook. Once I begin pulling them out, they quickly realize it's not feeding time and calm down, allowing me to grab them with my hands with no repercussions. I have some large Burmese pythons and boas which will rush to the front of the cage when I open them, hoping for food. A bite from some of them as a result of a feeding response could be bad, if not deadly. Since they are too big too use a hook with, I just tap them on the head with the hook or other object. They calm down and put their head down, allowing me to safely enter their domain. This works remarkably well for me. And you'll find that biologists, breeders, and zoo keepers all feed in the cage as well. Feeding in a separate enclosure is more of a beginner technique and will not effect the overall temperament of the snake. An aggerssive snake will be aggressive regardless of how or what it's fed. The way to tame a nippy snake is to handle it often to allow it to become used to it.
