Footsteps never been
So concrete
Rooted to the earth
Too desperate

A timed frantic subdued pace
One foot subsequent to the other

But I distinguish what they don’t
That each ankle is shackled
And laden with weight

The joints creak so rusty
Corroded by acidic temperaments
Snapping by the cargo
It must be age or chillness
That freezes them so cold

A trail of white powder
The leakage of marrow
That crows peck at

A tap tapping
Of beaks peck pecking
Away at the leathered meat
Askew at the bottom of the cliff
Finally skeletal enough to slip
Those bones out of
Those manacles

Just so many ways to bend the bars
And make a swift escape
