A Must Have for Cardboard boxes

Skil 2352-01 3.6-Volt Lithium-Ion Multi-Cutter. Note that I only have used this item for breaking down boxes from our business shipments. I was tired of cutting down boxes using a standard box-cutter blade, for flat packing.

For single-wall cartons, this cutter slices through the box folds/creases with ease, like pushing an self-powered lawnmower.
For single-wall cartons, cuts not-along the box folds, are still a breeze, with minimal effort.
Double-wall shipping cartons require a tad bit more effort to push the cutter, but nothing worth complaining about for a battery powered hand-cutter.

I have yet to find a battery-powered cutter that performs better then this model. I cut a few hundred boxes a week, about 20" cubed or larger, and have no complaints. With 30 minute box cutting sessions per day, I only have to recharge this cutter at the end of each week. The power indicator turns red, when you need a charge, just like a beard shaver.

Definately recommended for breaking down single or doublewall shipping cartons.

Read some of the reviews and was a little undecided. Went ahead and ordered and it works just as described. Cut down quite a few boxes so they can be recycled. But best feature was opening those ridiculous plastic packages. Zip it was open. NO fighting the shears, or using a utility knife. All and all it was a great purchase and with lithium ion it should last quite awhile between charges. Would never have bought it, but...

Would never have bought it, but... I got one for Christmas - 2008. I've used it a few times on cardboard getting ready for recycling. Last month (6 months later) I screened in a porch with aluminum screen. This thing cut the aluminum screen like scissors cut paper. Holds a charge very well - I have not even plugged in the charger yet. Perhaps I will have to find it someday. I think it is in the garage...

Very effective for breaking down cardboard for recycling

I got this to replace the drywall knife I've used to break down our cardboard for recycling. I'm very happy with it.

Here are some tips I have after using it a few weeks. Cut large pieces of corrugated cardboard perpendicular to the slats and then make the majority of your cuts parallel to them. The power cutter works much better this way because it finds a thin groove and goes right through it. Also, make your cuts along edges of cardboard boxes to start since they're the thinnest parts.

I've had mixed results with other materials. The sharpening part at the bottom can get caught up on those hard to open plastic packages some items come in. If you wiggle and push it it'll eventually get through it. It's done "ok" on some thick rags in the garage, you'll just need to make sure you're pulling them tight.

A couple other pro's for me are that the battery life seems very good considering I've only charged it once and that was a couple weeks ago when I got it. I don't use it that frequently, but it is nice to see that it holds a charge well over time. The auto sharpener also does keep the blade relatively sharp and makes me not miss changing dull blades in a drywall knife.

All in all, this thing isn't perfect, but it's very useful. You WILL have to push (sometimes hard on extremely thick cardboard) to use it as it does not do all the work for you. Expect to be happy with it if you're using it to replace a drywall knife for general cutting around the house.
