Need opinion on cordless drills. Keep the Dewalt or return it?

It's time for me to seriously upgrade from a Black & Decker 7.2V(Target) drill to a new one with more power,speed,etc. I'll be using the drill for basic things such as putting up blinds to maybe down the road doing a deck,kitchen,sheetrock,etc. By know means am I going to build a house with it but I do want a drill that will be able to handle small to large projects. I'm looking for something that is lightweight as well.

I picked up a Dewalt 18V (DW959K2)from Lowes on sale for $119. It turns out that it's some sort of model that Lowes doesn't even carry now. I don't know if it's an older model or what. It doesn't have a rubber grip like the current Dewalts leading me to believe that it may not be comfortable after extended usage.

So my dilemma: Do I return it and check out one of the newer XRP Dewalts like the 14.4 or reg 18V(same as mine with grip?) or should I check out something newer like the Makita Lithium-ion 3.5 lps 18v,Panasonic 15.6 (3.5 NI-MH) or other brands? Help.

Personaly I would keep the one that you have. The XRP is $299 and way overkill for the typical DIYer. I have an 18-voly Ryobi-no padded grip and use it alot and it is comfortable and not fatiguing to use. I am just thinking of the price for feature trade you really do not get an extra $170 worth of features in my opinion with XRP. As for the NiMH batterry type..they may run longer between charges but that is about it-I get about 8 hours out of the Ryobi NiCADs

help please.. which drill should i buy?

Makita 18V Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2 In. Driver-Drill Kit

My boyfriend asked for this for christmas. I think he picked this because it was only 200. I am willing to spend 350. Is there a drill that is similar but better. Maybe one that he will like more.

I don't want to buy one and him say i wanted the other one because its better.

He works on cars at a body shop and his drill uses air. I know he wants electric but that's all i know..

$200 is a lot of money for an electric drill. It is already a top of the line model. Plus, it is Lithium Ino, which is very important. Those have the most power.

If you can get that model, go ahead. If you can't get it anymore, chose a Milwakee, Dewalt, or Craftsman Professional with the same specs.

If you have an additional $150 to blow, get some accessories for it. For example, some additional drill bits would be nice. You can buy wood boring bits, masonry bits, or some large size bits. You could also get additional drivers for it. It probably comes with some, but you would be suprised how many accessories you can buy for a drill. Fill up his stocking with all the extras and he'll be nice to you for a long time!

I agree, keep it clean. Also, before you install a bit, make sure it's clean and put a small amount of bit grease on the shank. And like any power tool, eventually you may need to change the carbon brushes in the motor. It's cheap, takes no time. You should be able to find a Makita service center on their website.

Buying power tools for my husband. Brands?

Hello everyone,

I'm purchasing a tool set for my husband. I have selected a Makita Lithiom-Ion tool set for him that includes a drill, an impact drill, a light and a circular saw (whatever that is). The price is quite hefty (over $400 for the set).

My question is, is Makita a good brand? I've never heard of this brand.

It seems to be top rated, but I wondering if I should buy Dewalt, Skil or Milwakee instead. I'm trying to replace that piece of crap Black and decker set that i gave him for chrismas a couple of years back LOL.

Your thoughts?

I'm a licensed electrician and use cordless tools everyday.
There is every conceivable brand at the job-site, and I've tried them all.
Two years ago my Porter-Cable crapped out, and after much research I bought the Makita 18V Lith-Ion, and I love it.
It has features that no other manufacturer has, and it doesn't weight a lot. Some will disagree, but if you're using the tool for hours on end, a heavy one will end up annoying you.

Do not buy a Ryobi, there's a reason they're so inexpensive.
Milwaukee has always been one of the best, BUT it was purchased buy the same company that makes Ryobi....so who knows.
In my opinion the 3 top tool companies out there now are;
1) Makita
2) Milwaukee
3) Bosch

Can I use a SDS bull point chisel in a rotary hammer (Makita HR2440)?

This Makita drill doesn't have an only hammerr function, just rotary hammer and rotary drill.

I'am intending to make a hole in a wall to install a window and I am not in a budget to buy a demolition hammer. Besides, there are no places to rent tools where I live.

Or any other suggestions to cut a brick wall covered with concrete?

The right tool for the job would be a demolition saw with a masonry blade to give you a straight break line. Not only will you get a straighter cut, it will also be much easier to dress and finish your rough opening to allow you to install the window afterwards.
In a pinch, and for a smaller opening, such as pipe penetrations, a series of holes drilled with your rotary hammer drill is a practical move then dress the opening using the bull point or chisel, but with the larger opening for a window this would be labor intensive.
Instead of buying, you can rent one of these saws for a reasonable cost from a tool rental supply. You can also check your local Home Depot or Lowes which usually rent tools for less than a hundred bucks.
This rental will save you well over the expene in time and effort as well as giving you a cleaner end product and easier final installation.

Keep the 18V Makita Li-ion cordless drill?

Hi guys.

I have just bought a new Makita 18V Li-ion cordless impact drill - for an arm and a leg. I decided fork out for something that will last me for years (with sensible battery rotation) for regular trade use. I haven't use it yet.

My local hardware shop is having a Dewalt sale soon, where I could take it back for an 18V 3Ah (NiCd) impact hammer drill.

Is anyone in a position to directly compare the two?
Is there a difference in performance and/or build quality?

There's almost no feedback out there on the new Li-ion Mak's, and certainly no comparisons with other brands, like Dewalt.

Makita has always been considered the cadilac of tools but because of price has seen limited production. The dewalt because of price and durability has been virtually adopted as the tool of choice for the construction industry. i currently own 2 14v cordless Dewalt;s and they have stood up to a 12 foot drop from a roof, installing over 10 lbs of 3" deck screws without a problem. My Makita cordless 18v i got for x-mas still sits in its box. Didnt really care for the fit in my hand for large projects and heavy use.
