You park your car on the drive and yet you still have to work on your
projects in the back yard. If you are not using the garage for
its designed purpose, why not turn it into a tidy workshop?

Here are five simple steps to transform your garage into a perfect small home workshop:

1) Make your own workbench from an old door, some sawhorses or scrap wood.

2) Fix a pegboard on the wall to store your tools. It would be a great idea to mount it above your workbench. Strategically place pegs according to the type of tools you will be placing on the board. After hanging your tools, trace around them with a pen so you will know where each one goes after use.

3) Use old jars for storing nuts, nails, screws and bolts.

4) Make a storage box for the rags as they tend to accumulate in the working area.

5) Use a small tackle box for carrying items such as screws and nails as you move about the shop.

So now that you have a tidy shop area it’s time to think about all those home remodelling projects that you have not yet tackled. Finding out how to tile the right way has to be one of the most prized home improvements skills. And you can do it with instructional laying tile videos:
How to tile

The article below is from a series of home renovation articles, tips, videos and information about bathroom remodeling ...

If you're worried about the cost to remodel bathroom fixtures and components, then maybe you don't need to start from scratch. Giving your bathroom a new look may be as simple as upgrading your bath tub. Bath design has come a long way and you can choose styles that range from classic to contemporary. In this article, we've got valuable tips on choosing a tub that will have you soaking in luxury.

The first decision, when considering a new bath design, is the end purpose of the room. Are you renovating a guest bathroom? Is it your kids' bathroom or a master bath? Will this be a handicapped bath for an elderly parent? The next obvious thing to consider is your budget. Tubs with a lot of features can be expensive, so decide what you're willing to pay for. If you love bathing, then investing in a quality tub is money well spent. However, you can get a jetted tub, spa or soaking tub nowadays at fairly reasonably prices if you shop around.

You must also consider the available space and what it will take to install the tub. Check to see if extra carpentry will be needed for installation and find out how much the tub will weigh when it's full. A tub filled with water needs to be adequately supported, so check your framing. Cast-iron tubs, whirlpools, soaking and sunken tubs usually require additional support. A tub sized for more than one person will put extra demands on the home's hot water heater too, so you may also require an upgrade or a new water heater.

Besides the common rectangular shape, tubs also come in corner, oval, circular and freestanding styles. Built-in tubs can be alcove, drop-in or corner style. An alcove tub is standard in many homes and are often tub-shower combinations with waterproof surrounding walls. Drop-in tubs can be sunken into the floor or a tub deck. Drop-in models that are mounted into their own frame or deck will need additional carpentry or framework, which can add to the overall cost. Corner model built-ins are installed in the corner, with surrounds on two sides. A free-standing tub has legs or ball-and-claw feet. These tubs often have rolled edges and slipper backs for soaking.

You wouldn't buy a car without test driving it, so hop into a bathtub at the store and test it for comfort. A tub fit for soaking should have a bath design depth of at least 15 to 20 inches. The material the tub is made of should also be considered. Porcelain on steel is the most common bathtub material and is resistant to corrosion, acid and abrasion. Fiberglass is one the least expensive tub materials but it's not as durable. Other material options include cast iron, solid surfacing and natural stone. Regardless of which tub you decide to go with when it's time to remodel a bathroom, remember to soak up the pleasures of a luxurious bath experience.

There are several things to consider when choosing kitchen countertops. Appearance, use, and of course cost, are among these. Prices can range from $10 per square foot to more than $100. All of these should be factored into whatever decision you finally make.

The most affordable types are laminates, which range in price from $10-$40 per square foot. Although they're not as durable as some styles, they are fairly easy to install. Fortunately, they are inexpensive to replace, as they will begin to wear and show signs of age quickly.

There are also a wide variety of colors and textures to choose from. Some provide very good stain resistance and ease of cleaning. Replacement of these kitchen countertops can usually be accomplished in a weekend. It may be easier to replace the plywood underneath as well, rather than spending hours preparing the old stuff.

Another style, that is in the middle price range, is ceramic tile. These can cost as much as $50 per square foot, although some can be as little as a few dollars. They're relatively easy to install new, but present some challenges when trying to replace or repair. Prying old pieces that have been glued down for a while can be quite difficult.

The biggest problem with ceramic tiles is grout, because of the difficulty it presents for cleaning. They might crack ever so often although they are considered quite lasting on the whole. When this happens, they are usually left alone since they are so difficult to replace. Because of this, these countertops often begin looking old and rundown.

They are very resistant to heat, staining and scratching, and can last a lifetime if cared for properly. They are also very easy to clean.

One of the more recently conceived types is styled concrete. This kind usually runs around $50 per square foot. It has a range of colors and it is highly resistant to heat.

It is recommended that a professional install this type of countertop. It is heavy and usually needs sealed a few times before use. It also requires considerable drying time.

Another mid-priced option gaining popularity again is stainless steel. It usually runs around $50-$65 per square foot. Although the surface is easy to clean, it does show scratches and will become splotchy looking over time.

A favorite that has been around for years is marble. It's a bit more expensive, running around $75 per square foot. If sealed regularly, this style of countertop will look great for years. If it's not sealed properly, it will absorb stain causing materials. This type is also available in a variety of colors and patterns.

If you have budgeted enough, you can consider using granite as a kitchen countertop. Prices range from $80 per square foot to much more than that. This type must also be sealed regularly, but you can't beat the look and durability. Installation can be a bit trickier and should probably be done by professionals. This will give the final result less visible seams.

Engineered stone is a nice mix of modern technology and traditional looks. This type is in the middle of the price range, usually $50 per square foot or more. You can get just about any stone like pattern you can think of. This style really gives you an opportunity to use your imagination.

This material is very durable and heat resistant. Another nice feature is that it never requires sealing. Stains and scratches should not be a problem either. It is possible to install this type of kitchen countertop yourself, but usually your best bet is to go with a professional.

Now you have the information you need to choose the right countertop material for your specific needs. You should be able to find an attractive and durable choice that fits your budget.

Changing the Look of Your Bathroom Forever!

When it comes to home improvements the bathroom is often the last room that people look at, although by all rights, it should be the first! The bathroom is the room that we begin our days in and it should help set the tone for the rest of the day. Similarly, it is also a room that we use to make ourselves feel refreshed and renewed; how often have you felt so much better after a long hot shower, or after preparing for a fun night out? When people think of home redecorating, they too often think only about the bedroom and the living room and never pause to think about the bathroom. Take a look at a few plans for renovating your bathroom today and see what you can do with your own!

When you are thinking about your bathroom, the first thing that you need to think about is light. Many bathrooms have no source of natural light at all, making them grimy and gloomy. Many people, if they have the means and the opportunity, have changed this aspect of their bathrooms around by installing a skylight, flooding the room with warm natural sunshine. If you know that this isn't an option for you, then consider installing soft florescent lights, or something with a low wattage that will give your bathroom a comforting glow.

If you are considering redecorating your bathroom, you should think about the walls. What is your first impression of the room as you walk in? Does it feel too cold or antiseptic? Does it feel claustrophobic and busy? Taking care of your walls can help with either of these problems immensely; all you need to do is a little bit of planning ahead. What are you looking for in terms of color? Do you like a warm, sweet, daytime look? You'll find that using a pale yellow, or mild rose or mauve or even a very pale lavender can make your bathroom feel like spring. If you prefer a cooler look, something reminiscent of the water, consider a pale shade of blue or green.

Don't forget to think about new towels if you are tackling the walls; towels hang up to dry and make an interesting visual counterpoint to the room. Too often, people simply don't match the towels at all, leading to a jarring clash that can be quite unpleasant. White towels will go with a wide range of decor, but they can look worn and dirty before their time. Think about getting towels that are just a few shades darker than your walls, and you'll find that you are in a great situation when it comes to color in your bathroom.

Another aspect of bathroom design is your shower curtain. This takes up a lot of space visually, yet some people still insist on using an old one that makes the whole room appear dingy. Take some time and select a nice shower curtain for your bathroom. If you are concerned about the lack of light or space, consider a clear shower curtain. You can also get a shower curtain that is printed with a subtle design or even one with water proof pockets into which you can slide your decorations.

Remember that when it comes to accessories, you can always get them to match up to a theme. Whether you like ducks, lighthouses, horses or simply love a rustic touch, you'll be able to find plenty of different plunger bottles, shower racks and soap dishes that will provide exactly that. Take some time, and choose your pieces carefully. While you don't want your bathroom to be overwhelmed, you do want to carry a theme that will be pretty and entertaining.

When you are thinking about redecorating your bathroom, a whole redesign might be in order. Get your budget together and think about what you can accomplish. Make sure that you have a theme that you can live with, and go from there. Remember that it doesn't have to be done in one fell swoop and that there are many different things that you can do to make sure that the process keeps moving along. Take some time and make sure that you like the decisions that you're making, but don't be afraid to make bug changes, either!

Raise House Values
It has become a very profitable business to buy homes, fix them up a little bit and then resell them at a tidy profit. Real estate prices continue to rise and this has produced a lucrative market in reselling houses. As a result, interest in home improvement had sky rocketed. Many homes can be purchased that simply require a quick room remodel or a fresh coat of paint. Maybe an older couple is moving into a retirement community and although their house is structurally sound, it needs some fresh paint or wallpaper. Maybe you can do a quick makeover on the bathroom and kitchen cupboards. These are all fairly simple upgrades that involve minimal investment but return good value when reselling the house. The key is to acquire a house that does not require major structural repair and simply needs to be freshened up.

Sump Pump Installation
Today, people don't want to buy a run down house where the paint is peeling. Nobody wants to invest in a house whose with leaky plumbing. You would not wish to get into a project requiring major home plumbing construction or sump pump installation issues. Having observed this, if one is planning to sell a house, home improvement is essential to realize a good price on the sale of your home. These days package appearance is everything. If the house you are selling does not appear neat and trim, the chances of your selling it at a satisfactory price will be much lower.

This is one of the reasons why home improvement loans have become a frequent practice. Now it seems that we all want to increase the value of our home and property by carrying out home improvements. Apart from looking nice, a well cared for home is also a better investment. A neat well maintained looking home is valued at a higher price and will also facilitate better deals if you apply for a personal secured loan. An unsecured loan is not the most difficult to get, but they usually come with a higher interest rate and require a better credit rating. In most cases it is acceptable to apply for an unsecured loan but if you have a house to offer as collateral, a secured loan is usually a better option.

DIY Home Improvement
This brings us to the issue of financing home improvements. If you own a house, you could opt for a secured home improvement loan. This will allow you to secure lower rates of interest and you will most likely be able to borrow a greater amount. If you are still in the process of paying down a current mortgage, you could also opt for a home equity loan. Home equity loans allow you to leverage the equity value of your home. This advance of funds can then be used to finance other costs such as education, emergencies or home improvements.

Ultimately, it will all come down to how you would like to finance your do it yourself home improvements. Think it out well and do some research on all your options. Banks and credit unions are only too happy to help you secure a personal secured loan, home equity loans and home improvement loans.
