Dewalt Power Tools - A Little Bit Of History

DeWalt is one of the largest power tool Manufacturers in the UK. Easily recognizable by there bright yellow casing and bold text logo, DeWalt power tools are renowned among building professionals as being top quality, often recommended from person to person.

In this article is it my wholehearted intension to tell you about the DeWalt company and where there come from. Some of the company’s history may surprise you.

The inventor Raymond E. DeWalt founded the DeWalt Company back in 1924. Mr DeWalt had invented a new power tool he named the radial arm saw. The radial arm saw is a circular saw mounted on a sliding arm. The radial arm saw revolutionized woodworking and Raymond became quite a successful man.

In 1949, the American Machine and Foundry Company bought DeWalt. However, AMF later sold the DeWalt brand to Black & Decker in 1960. During the early Black & Decker days may of Black & Decker’s high-end tools were branded with the DeWalt name as it was believed it carried more prestige. Which as we now know worked out very well. To this day Black & Decker aim at the DIY market and DeWalt the Professional market.

Black and Decker later sold off the radial arm manufacturing facility to two company executives. The original radial arm saws designed by Raymond E. DeWalt are still available from Original Saw Co.

DeWalt today, manufactures and sells more than 200 different power hand-tools and 800 accessories. DeWalt has its headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland. However, they trade across the

DeWalt took over German high-end manufacturer ELU in 1994. This helped DeWalt to enlarge their assortment of cordless tools and other tools by utilizing ELUs high-tech revolutionary technology.

I wish them look as a company with a great history of creating professional high quality revolutionary tools don’t deserve to be just used as a name.

How to Go Park with your Power Tool

Going park is getting easier every day. Here is an article where I simply encompassed my makita power tool system with a portable photovoltaic panel system. Within this system I have a deep cycle power tool battery for makita I use as an energy well, storage. Store excess power generated by the photovoltaic panel in this deep cycle 12V makita battery. The power stored in this deep cycle battery is then dumped into a "In-Vehicle Charger" which then finally dumps the power, originally generated by the photovoltaic panel, into a cordless power tool battery.

Incidentally, maybe you will thinking; "why not just hook-up the IN-VEHICLE CHARGER directly to the solar panel?" I tried this with my small wattage solar panel and it didn't generate enough power to run the IN-VEHICLE CHARGER. Henceforth I added a deep cycle battery to the circuit. I use this portable photovoltaic panel for my hot house, operates a 12 volt fan, in the spring and then relocate it to my garden in the summer to pump water. I place it close to the garage and use it to recharge the makita power tool batteries in the fall.

Now, the obvious question is; what type of solar panel will I need? Answer; purchase one with at least 1 amp of output. But please remember, solar panels are usually rated by wattage and their voltage is usually 12 volts. Using the simple formula (amps x volts = watts) leaves us with a solar panel of approximately 12 to 15 watts.

Also, keep in mind portability. You may want to bring your portable set-up to a job sight or camping some day. Henceforth, I would not recommend a large panel if you want to stay fairly portable.

Modern Power Tools - the Lithium Ion Cordless Drill

Power tools are essential for those jobs, which require more intense workmanship that ordinary tools cannot handle. A power tool is basically a tool, which is powered by an electric motor or alternatively a compressed air motor or petrol driven motor. They are typically used in the construction industry but are also used around the house to complete those otherwise hard to do jobs. Power tools are used for cutting, drilling, shaping, grinding, painting, sanding and polishing. Machine tools are a form of power tools used in metal work. It is not uncommon for the same power tool to be used both in wood and metal work.

The first used power tool was the lathe. Power tools were initially developed during the time of the industrial revolution. When factories began to use power tools to drive belts from overhead shafts. The main power source was a water wheel or later a steam engine. These tools were stationary until the introduction of the electric motor in the 1880s, which made the self powered stationary and portable tools we know today possible. The electric motor has remained the preferred source by which stationary power tools are driven. These tools use a cord but what has become increasingly popular for portable power tools is the battery. However batteries still have limitations because of they run out and lack sustaining power. These batteries also have a constant discharge rate meaning that the power output remains constant until the battery is depleted, something that nickel-cadmium batteries lacks. This constant discharge rate makes cordless drills much more versatile. Lithium-ion batteries also hold a charge for a significantly longer time than nickel-cadmium batteries, about 2 years if not used, vs. around 4 months for a nickel-cadmium battery.
