How to Take Care Of Power Tools Battery

As a reader of both newsgroups listed in this header, I thought this might posting might be helpful, not only to myself, but other woodworkers and pilots who use power tool!

Cordless (NiCad Powered) power tools are becoming more mainstream and are taking on a more significant role in woodworking. At the same time, the individuals who rely on battery systems to keep thousands of dollars worth of remote controlled aircraft in the sky have developed battery maintenance into a science and are generally far past the myth stage.

So keeping in mind that a cordless tool doesn't come with any of the sophisticated peak chargers and monitoring equipment used with aircraft, and that most power tools come with two sets of batteries, what are some general guidelines that should be followed in order to maximize the performance and longevity of the power tool battery pack?

1. Don't leave them on charge continiously. Use an appliance timer to put in 1 hr a day. If you run one down just set the timer to charge for 16 hrs. I keep all my cordless products plugged into a power strip that is plugged into a timer. See the web page for details.

2. Keeping batteries cool makes them last longer.

3. Don't leave them in the tool if they are easily removable. Should a cell ever short out and leak it will damage the tool.

4. It doesn't matter in what state of charge you store the battery, but not having them charged when you want to use them kind of defeats the purpose and utility of the tool. I charge mine and put in shop refrigerator. Keeping them there slows the self discharge way down so they
will hold a charge for several months.

How to Go Park with your Power Tool

Going park is getting easier every day. Here is an article where I simply encompassed my makita power tool system with a portable photovoltaic panel system. Within this system I have a deep cycle power tool battery for makita I use as an energy well, storage. Store excess power generated by the photovoltaic panel in this deep cycle 12V makita battery. The power stored in this deep cycle battery is then dumped into a "In-Vehicle Charger" which then finally dumps the power, originally generated by the photovoltaic panel, into a cordless power tool battery.

Incidentally, maybe you will thinking; "why not just hook-up the IN-VEHICLE CHARGER directly to the solar panel?" I tried this with my small wattage solar panel and it didn't generate enough power to run the IN-VEHICLE CHARGER. Henceforth I added a deep cycle battery to the circuit. I use this portable photovoltaic panel for my hot house, operates a 12 volt fan, in the spring and then relocate it to my garden in the summer to pump water. I place it close to the garage and use it to recharge the makita power tool batteries in the fall.

Now, the obvious question is; what type of solar panel will I need? Answer; purchase one with at least 1 amp of output. But please remember, solar panels are usually rated by wattage and their voltage is usually 12 volts. Using the simple formula (amps x volts = watts) leaves us with a solar panel of approximately 12 to 15 watts.

Also, keep in mind portability. You may want to bring your portable set-up to a job sight or camping some day. Henceforth, I would not recommend a large panel if you want to stay fairly portable.

Reset a MAKITA Battery:

Press the battery pack removal button, located on the back of the power tool's handle, to release the battery pack from the MAKITA power tool.

Slide the battery pack along the rail track, on the bottom of the power tool, to remove the pack.

Place the battery pack into the battery pack charger with the metal contact side matching the metal contacts in the charger.

Let the battery pack charge for eight hours. Your MAKITA battery pack is now reset.

If a downside to cordless drills exists, it is managing battery power and recharging to prevent interruptions during the project. Make it a point to know the battery type and its characteristics being used with the drill. Doing so helps improve battery management and will ultimately extend its life.

Plug the battery charger directly into the outlet. Avoid using extension cords to reduce the effects of voltage drop.
