There's quite a number of cordless tool manufactures in the tool industry these days. What impressed me with this particular situation is that Bosch went well beyond their advertised warranty which not only made me look good, it made them look good and impressed on my customer that they were serious about having top of the line tool.

Well in the age of the lithium drill, Bosch is still making it easy for me to sell their tool line with confidence. They made some serious changes to the cordless Bosch line by beefing up the tool with a better housing and steel reinforcements were necessary. Their Brute Tough line is next to unbreakable! I have only had to replace a couple of drill housings. One was run over by a truck on a cold January day and the other fell off a gas station canopy on a cold Wisconsin work day. Again this kind of durability makes me look good and keeps the customer on the job.

Most of my repairs on the cordless Bosch line, since their introduction of the Brute Tough line, consists of a switch here or there, a bad chuck now and again and some brush sets or broken wire replacement. Today's cordless Bosch tools really have cut down on my service work, again, making me look good!

Now, add to that inherent reliability, a 3 year warranty. Cordless Bosch tools come with a 3 year warranty. The first year is a replacement warranty. What does that mean? If you are on a job and the motor fries on you Bosch drill. You call Bosch, they send you a new drill with a label for your old drill, you box it up and send it back and you are done! That process usually takes just two days. You just can't beat that turn around time. The batteries are covered for two years, but the tool itself continues on for a total of three years of parts and labor. After 3 years, most cordless tools are getting a little tired, you only get so many charges out of any battery pack.

Yes the cordless Bosch line with the three year warranty makes me look good (do you see a pattern?). One problem with the warranty is that you must register for the warranty for it to be in affect for three years. This is where the potential for me to look bad rears it's ugly head. If you don't register the tool with Bosch, you won't have the 3 year warranty. It's funny how many of my customers have heard the "3 year warranty" but not the "if you register with Bosch" part. I have remedied that though, I usually register the tools for my customer. Again it makes me look good, especially if a repair on the tool is needed.

Don't hesitate on a cordless Bosch tool because you have to register the tool. It really is quite simple. You can do it on line or give Bosch ProVantage a call. It usually take only a couple of minutes to register a tool. Once you have registered one tool, registering more in the future is very easy, just make sure you keep you account info on file. A real advantage of the Bosch ProVantage program is you can actually keep track of your tools on line including your purchase date and any service work that was performed on the tool.

How to Recondition Power Tools Battery by batteryfast

Power tool batteries are typically nickel cadmium rechargeable drill batteries

Power tools use batteries or electricity to function, and batteries can be rechargeable or for one-time use. Typically, they are rechargeable. Nickel cadmium, or NiCd batteries, are normally used in power tools. These can be charged up to around 1,000 times before they need replacing. Reconditioning, especially after months of no use, is very good for these batteries, and should be done about once a month throughout battery life to ensure proper functioning and optimal lifespan.

Instructions:

1. Run the battery in the power tool without any obstruction. For instance, if you have a power drill, run the drill by itself, do not try to drill in anything; just let the battery run until it's dead.

2. Plug the power tools battery charger into the electrical outlet.

3. Charge the cordless drill battery back to full capacity.

4. Run the battery as before until it is dead again.

5.Recharge the battery again.

6. Repeat once a month, or if this process has not improved your battery's performance, throw that one away and purchase a new one.

Tips & Warnings:

There are other, more complicated, ways to recondition a battery. Check your owner's manual for proper care and maintenance. This may show how to recondition your power tool battery, but more important, follow the instructions on care and maintenance to prolong its life.

If the casing is cracked and/or components of the battery are leaking/falling out, throw the battery away immediately.

As a reader of both newsgroups listed in this header, I thought this might posting might be helpful, not only to myself, but other woodworkers and pilots who use power tool!

Cordless (NiCad Powered) power tools are becoming more mainstream and are taking on a more significant role in woodworking. At the same time, the individuals who rely on battery systems to keep thousands of dollars worth of remote controlled aircraft in the sky have developed battery maintenance into a science and are generally far past the myth stage.

So keeping in mind that a cordless tool doesn't come with any of the sophisticated peak chargers and monitoring equipment used with aircraft, and that most power tools come with two sets of batteries, what are some general guidelines that should be followed in order to maximize the performance and longevity of the power tool battery pack?

1. Don't leave them on charge continiously. Use an appliance timer to put in 1 hr a day. If you run one down just set the timer to charge for 16 hrs. I keep all my cordless products plugged into a power strip that is plugged into a timer. See the web page for details.

2. Keeping batteries cool makes them last longer.

3. Don't leave them in the tool if they are easily removable. Should a cell ever short out and leak it will damage the tool.

4. It doesn't matter in what state of charge you store the battery, but not having them charged when you want to use them kind of defeats the purpose and utility of the tool. I charge mine and put in shop refrigerator. Keeping them there slows the self discharge way down so they
will hold a charge for several months.

DeWalt is one of the largest power tool Manufacturers in the UK. Easily recognizable by there bright yellow casing and bold text logo, DeWalt power tools are renowned among building professionals as being top quality, often recommended from person to person.

In this article is it my wholehearted intension to tell you about the DeWalt company and where there come from. Some of the company’s history may surprise you.

The inventor Raymond E. DeWalt founded the DeWalt Company back in 1924. Mr DeWalt had invented a new power tool he named the radial arm saw. The radial arm saw is a circular saw mounted on a sliding arm. The radial arm saw revolutionized woodworking and Raymond became quite a successful man.

In 1949, the American Machine and Foundry Company bought DeWalt. However, AMF later sold the DeWalt brand to Black & Decker in 1960. During the early Black & Decker days may of Black & Decker’s high-end tools were branded with the DeWalt name as it was believed it carried more prestige. Which as we now know worked out very well. To this day Black & Decker aim at the DIY market and DeWalt the Professional market.

Black and Decker later sold off the radial arm manufacturing facility to two company executives. The original radial arm saws designed by Raymond E. DeWalt are still available from Original Saw Co.

DeWalt today, manufactures and sells more than 200 different power hand-tools and 800 accessories. DeWalt has its headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland. However, they trade across the

DeWalt took over German high-end manufacturer ELU in 1994. This helped DeWalt to enlarge their assortment of cordless tools and other tools by utilizing ELUs high-tech revolutionary technology.

A cordless DeWalt drill is a great product if you are considering buying your next cordless drill. Cordless tools from the company are always of the best quality and you will want to think about buying more tools than just the cordless drill. Originally, there cordless range was just re branded Black & Decker equipment, however DeWalt have very recently tried to lose this skeleton in the closet by starting work on there own high end gear. I wish them look as a company with a great history of creating professional high quality revolutionary tools don’t deserve to be just used as a name.

Power tools are essential for those jobs, which require more intense workmanship that ordinary tools cannot handle. A power tool is basically a tool, which is powered by an electric motor or alternatively a compressed air motor or petrol driven motor. They are typically used in the construction industry but are also used around the house to complete those otherwise hard to do jobs. Power tools are used for cutting, drilling, shaping, grinding, painting, sanding and polishing. Machine tools are a form of power tools used in metal work. It is not uncommon for the same power tool to be used both in wood and metal work.

The first used power tool was the lathe. Power tools were initially developed during the time of the industrial revolution. When factories began to use power tools to drive belts from overhead shafts. The main power source was a water wheel or later a steam engine. These tools were stationary until the introduction of the electric motor in the 1880s, which made the self powered stationary and portable tools we know today possible. The electric motor has remained the preferred source by which stationary power tools are driven. These tools use a cord but what has become increasingly popular for portable power tools is the battery. However batteries still have limitations because of they run out and lack sustaining power. Cost of buying and maintaining the use of batteries keep the cordless versions in lower demand on the market. Nailers and paint sprayers more frequently use air pressure, while chain saws, weed eaters and lawn motors have a preference for petrol driven motors.

One of the most popular power tools is the cordless drill, which is a type of electric drill but instead of being connected to a wall socket uses rechargeable batteries. Typically cordless drills come in the hammer drill configuration and mostly have a clutch setting, which allows them to be used for driving screws. In order to continue working without much interruption the tradesman will have a number of spare battery packs charging while drilling, so that he or she can quickly swap them.

The earliest cordless drills used 7.2V battery packs but over the years the battery voltage has increased to 18V and more, thus allowing these tools to produce as much torque as those drills connected to a main power supply. The main disadvantage of most current cordless drills is the use of nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries, which develop a "memory effect" or internal short circuits due to dendrite growth. This severely limits their usefulness and life span and in turn creates a hazardous materials disposal problem. Drill manufacturers are now producing lithium ion batteries. Makita Electric Works and Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation are two such manufacturers producing lithium ion batteries. The main advantages are lack of memory effect and very short charging time. Lithium ion batteries can provide an hour of work per twenty minutes of charging instead of vice versa. These batteries also have a constant discharge rate meaning that the power output remains constant until the battery is depleted, something that nickel-cadmium batteries lacks. This constant discharge rate makes cordless drills much more versatile. Lithium-ion batteries also hold a charge for a significantly longer time than nickel-cadmium batteries, about 2 years if not used, vs. around 4 months for a nickel-cadmium battery.

Cordless drills will increase in their popularity as science overcomes its' limitations and as power tools become increasingly powerful.
